General Zorawar’s fort: General Zorawar’s Fort or commonly known as Riasi Fort, is an ancient fort preserving the private wealth of the rulers of Dogra in Jammu. This ancient monument, now in ruins, stands above the Leh Palace and the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa. General Zorawar singh was a renowned & controversial warrior and is known for his continued struggle with the Chinese rulers over Ladakh. The fort houses the collection of the ruler’s treasure, coins & stamps. The fort can be reached by a 30 minute Trek from the old city market or hire a local jeep to the palace.

Hall of Fame: Located at the Spituk-Kargil road 4 kms from Leh is a museum build in memory of the brave soldiers who laid down their lived fighting the Indo-Pak wars. The museum maintained by the Indian Army showcases the biographies of the brave soldiers, the arms & amenities seized from the Pakistani forces. The museum also showcases the apparels & amenities used by the soldiers in the Siachen area also known as the highest battleground due to the ongoing border conflict between China & India.

Leh Palace: Built in 17th century the nine storey palace had a marvelous structure and was used as a residential palace for the king Singge Namgyal. The palace is situated 2 Kms from Leh and is easily accessible by Taxi or Jeep. The palace also hosts a museum displaying painted & embroidered scrolls, & paintings.

Shanti Stupa: Shanti Stupa was established by a peace sect of Japanese Buddhists, in Changspa in Leh. Shanti stupa menas peace (shanti) pillar (stupa). The stupa was inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1985 with an intention of spreading the Buddhist ideology & a message of peace in the world. The beautiful surroundings of the stupa adds a flavor to the tourists mood. The stupa is easily accessible through trekk, taxis or jeeps.

Stok Palace: Built in 1825 by king Tsespal Tondup Namgyal, the palace has a beautiful mix of ancient & modern architecture. The palace is situated 14 kms from Leh across the Indus river. The palace is famous for beautiful gardens, sunrises, sunsets, collection of royal attire, crown & other royal materials.

Karma Dupgyud Choeling monastery: This world famous Buddhist Monastery is run by the Karmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhists. Karmapa stands for “the embodiment of all the activities of the Buddha” or “the one who carries out buddha-activity”. The monastery is situated 9 kms from Leh & is easily accessible by Taxi or jeeps.

Mountain Biking: The Second highest motorable road and hostile terrains add a spine chilling trill to the cycling enthusiasts. The road between Leh to Manali gives an opportunity to the mountain bikers to cut through the himalayan ranges and the picturesque landscapes.

Trekking: Leh, a paradise for trekkers, is attracted by many natural lovers and adventurous tourist. The snow covered Himalayan trekking terrains poses mild to very tough challenges to trekkers. The experienced trekkers got the competitive chances of highly challenging and breathtaking trekking trails in mountain ranges surrounding Leh. Some popular trekking routes include Spiti to Ladakh, Markha Valley trekking, Ladakh Zanskar trekking and the Nubra Valley trekking. Safari through the plain valleys in the banks of Indus River is also very attractive. One can also opt for Sham Valley trekking.

 

 

  • AirLeh’s Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport has flights to Delhi at least daily on Jet Airways and/or Indian Airlines and/or Air India which also provides twice weekly services to Jammu and a weekly flight to Srinagar. Connect in Delhi for other destinations. Go Air operates Delhi to Leh daily flights during peak time.
  • TrainThere are no railways currently in Ladakh, however a railway is proposed
  • Road: Leh is connected to the rest of India by two high-altitude roads both of which are subject to landslides and neither of which are passable in winter when covered by deep snows. National Highway 1D from Srinagar via Kargil is open longer. Leh-Manali highway can be troublesome due to high passes & plateaus & landslide prone Rohtang pass near Manali
  • Local Transport: Jeeps & taxis are readily available for the local tours.

Srinagar – paradise on earth, is also the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir is perfectly placed in the center of the Kashmir valley. Srinagar has a special place in the history of ancient India. Srinagar was founded in 150 AD by king Pravarasen II. Nishat Bagh

Situated on the banks of the Dal Lake, with the Zabarwan Mountains as its backdrop, this ‘garden of bliss’ gives a magnificent view of the lake and the snowcapped Pir Panjal mountain range to the west of the valley. Nishat bagh was designed in 1633 AD by Asaf Khan, brother of Nur Jehan.

Shalimar Bagh

This garden was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619 for his beloved wife Nurjahan, the sprawling garden with four terraces is famous for imposing fountains, well laid out manicured gardens, tall trees & fresh air thus making it one of the must visit places in Srinagar.

Hazratbal Mosque

Also known as Dargah Sharif, Assar-e-Sharif and Madinat-Us-Sani,is considered to be one of the most important shrines for Muslims. The Mosque is a combination of Kashmiri and Mughal styles of architecture, with historical significance dating back to the 17th century. The white mosque is breathtakingly beautiful. The distinctiveness of the Hazratbal Mosque is that it enshrines the ‘Moi-e-Muqaddas’ (the sacred hair) of the prophet Mohammed, which is shown to public only on special occasions. Take a walk through the adjacent market area with a range of great fresh food and a thousand things deep fried.

Shankaracharya Mandir

Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on the Shankaracharya Hill (Takht-e-Suleiman) in Srinagar. The Temple is known to be built by Jaluka, the son of Emperor Ashoka around 200 BC.

Pari Mahal

The garden, in the lawn of Pari Mahal with a small spring in the middle, with blooming flowers and fruits overlooks the picturesque Dal Lake. Don’t miss the breathtaking views of the city from here.

Nehru Garden

A well maintained park with lake by Dept of Floriculture. The park occupies a large area and has a beverage shop run by the J&K Tourism department serving hot and flavoured “Kahva”, a traditional drink of Kashmir.

Trekking

Srinagar serves as a base for many trekking expeditions which lead to himalayan alpine high altitude lakes of Kashmir valley which has a great scope for adventure tourism. These high altitude alpine lakes have no access by any transport, they include Vishansar Lake, Nundkol Lake, Tarsar Lake, Gadsar Lake, Satsar Lake and so on.

  • AirInternational airport at Srinagar provides it air connectivity from various countries in the world. International, domestic and seasonal Hajj pilgrimage flights to Jeddah are operated from Sheikh ul Alam airport. Srinagar is connected by flights operated by Jet Airways, Jet Konnect, Indigo, SpiceJet, Go Air, Jet Lite and Air India from Delhi and Mumbai to Srinagar, with or without a stopover at Jammu. The frequency is once or twice a day by each airline. The cost is approx Rs 2,500 from Jammu, Rs 2,500-5,000 from Delhi one way and higher from Mumbai, depending on the season. Approximate cost of a trip to airport can be around Rs. 500-550 and time to reach airport from Srinagar city is nearly 1 hour.
  • Train: Nearest railway station is Jammu & Banihal.
  • Road: Srinagar is also well connected with roads where the J&K road transport corporation runs buses to Srinagar. Bus travel from Jammu takes around 12 hours whereas buses plying from Delhi may take upto 24 hours.

Baisaran and Tulian Lake are few nearby attractions that can be visited.

Lidder Valley

The hill station was earlier known as Gaurimarg, where Gauri stands for Goddess Parvati the wife of Lord Shiva. The name Gulmarg was given to this place by the King Yousuf Shah Chak.

Gondola Ride

The majestic view of the lush green hilly terrains and the panoramic views of the picturesque surroundings offer the greatest experience for a tourist while enjoying the cable car ride. Skiing

Skiing and snowboarding are two main activities in Gulmarg and it has become the most popular spot for skiing. The best time for skiing is during January to March. Skiing races are also organized here during the festivals like Christmas and Easter.

Trekking

Gulmarg is a very popular trekking base in the Himalayan regions. Gulmarg-Khilanmarg, Gulmarg-Apharwat and Gulmarg-Alapther trekking trails are very popular. The trekking through the breathtaking undulated snow covered sloppy Himalayan ranges is really an adventurous experience to extol. The best time for trekking is from April to November.

St. Mary’s church

St Mary’s Church is a religiously important church in Gulmarg. The church is located in the heart of the town. The construction of the church dates back to 150 years and was done by famous British architectures in the construction style of British churches. This holy church is rare sight of a Christian church in Gulmarg.

The city, which figured in ancient epic Mahabharata, was named first as Jamboo, but later it became Jammu. History and archeological evidence says that Jammu was the integral part of Harappa civilization.

Jammu city is known for its ancient temples, palaces and historically renowned places. To list a few important attractions Shri Mata Vaishno Devi temple,Bahu fort, Amar Mahal,Mubarak Mandi Palace complex and many more. Surinsar Lake is a natural attraction one should not miss in Jammu.

  • Raghunath MandirRaghunath Temple: constructed by Maharaja Gulab Singh and his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh starting in 1851 and finishing in 1857.The lovely temple complex consisting seven historical shrines adorned with a tower. The chief deities in these temples are different incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Lord Surya and Lord Shiva.
  • Ranbireshwar Temple: The temple is located on Shalimar Road near the New Secretariat and is one of the most renowned temples in Jammu
  • Charar-e-Sharief: Chrar-e-Sharief is a shrine revered by both Muslims and Hindus dedicated to Sheikh Nooruddin, who was arguably the greatest mystic-saint of Kashmir.
  • Hari Parbat Fort: The Mughal fort situated on the banks of the Dal Lake of Srinagar, it is positioned on top of the Sharika Hill.
  • Bahu Fort:Babu fort is the oldest fort in Jammu city. The fort renovated by rulers of Dogra in a later period, was constructed by Raja Bahulochan, nearly 300 years back. A majestic garden, known as Bagh-e-Bahu with extensive lawns beautifully filled with flowers and plants is a favorite picnic spot.The garden has all types of attractions ranging from plants, shrubs, big trees and flowers to waterfalls.
  • The Dargah o Peer Budhan Ali Shah (Peer Baba): This famous Dargah of the Muslim saint, Peer Budhan Ali Shah is situated on the backside of the Civil Airport
  • Peer Kho Cave Temple: A cave temple of Lord Shiva, Peer Khoh Temple has its main deity as Swayambhu Shivling. This shrine is also known as Jamawant Cave located nearby river Tawi.
  • Amar Mahal Palace MuseumAmar Mahal, constructed by King Raja Amar of Dogra in 1890s, is planned by a French architect.It was made out of a beautiful red sand stone.Later the palace was turned to museum with rich collections of paintings, books, inscriptions and sculptures.
  • Mubarak Mandi Palace: Mubarak Mandi Palace was the royal residence of the erstwhile Dogra Kings. A very beautiful architecture, blended with Baroque, Mugal, Rajasthani and European styles, attracts the tourists invariantly to this spot. The most striking section is the Sheesh Mahal. The pink hall in this palace houses the Dogra art museum displaying many valued paintings.
  • Adventure sports: Adventure sports are the main characteristic of this amazing city. Tourists are challenged with many opportunities like mountaineering, nature walks, trekking and Rafting.

Air: Jammu is connected with Srinagar, Delhi, Chandigarh, Leh, Mumbai and Bengaluru, the services are provided by major air carriers in India.

Train: Jammu city has a railway station called Jammu Tawi (station code JAT) that is well connected with major cities of India.

Road: National Highway 1A which passes through Jammu connects it to the Kashmir valley. National Highway 1B connects Jammu with Poonch town. Jammu is just 80 kilometres (50 mi) from Kathua town, while it is 68 kilometres (42 mi) from Udhampur city. Katra is also 49 kilometres (30 mi) away.

Local Transport: The city has JKSRTC city buses under and mini buses for local transport which run on some defined routes. These mini buses are called Matadors. Besides this auto-rickshaw service is also available. Local taxis are also available. Cycle rickshaws are also available for traveling short distances.
