Amazing Goa

Amazing Goa

Goa does not need any introduction; the attractions, hospitality and leisure it offers are enough to tell us the story why it has become the most sought after holiday destination in India. Ever since I read about the place in a famous travel magazine I was enthralled to venture out sometime and feel what they said about Goa. To no surprise the place took me mesmerized and spell bound that many a times after the visit I thought to lookout for options to settle down in Goa forever. To begin with I planned my trip with my roommates in Mumbai. Since mode of travel was no constraint for us we started looking out for Resorts in Goa. Thanks to Cleartrip.com who made it easy for us to choose a good resort at a reasonable price.

Being on a weekend visit, we had to choose the attractions with best possible combinations of fun and leisure. We reached Goa in the morning and after a brief stay at the ‘The Golden Suites & Spa’ beach resort located near to Calangute beach, we planned to cover north Goa. Soon after having a sumptuous breakfast we decided to do the first thing first and that was; hire a bike. Goa has lots of options for hiring a bike, all you need is a valid driver’s license.

With the favourable weather we soon hit the Baga beach to indulge in some water sports activities. It is one of the most happening place in India for the adventure lovers with lots of water sports options available. Ranging from a normal boat ride to Jet skiing to wind surfing, name it and you get it.

After spending the entire afternoon, we grabbed quick lunch at a nearby restaurant and went for shopping. I do not have any particular interest in shopping but the shops and the products on display lured me in shelling out some bucks. With the enduring activities all afternoon we were low on energy but high on spirits so we went to a nearby pub. Alcohol was available at reasonable rates so we had no option to leave, our bulk orders were like a test of limits. Later in the night we roamed around in the empty roads on our bikes and finally calling it a day at 2am in the morning.

The next day with a hangover at 11 am, we decided to spend the day at leisure and we shot off to nearby beaches spending sometime at the Calangute, Anjuna and Vagator beach. Being a weekend the beaches were a bit crowded but it was still fun for us as we managed to arrange a vacant spot to play some beach ball. Later in the day we left for the Chapora fort, inspired by the famous Bollywood movie Dil Chahta Hai, the scenic beauty around the fort was exciting. Our next stop was the Arpora food market, a night bazaar with lots of options and a heaven for shopaholics. We called the day a bit early as we had to checkout in the morning and bid good bye to Goa with a craving for more.

A stupendous chance to explore Jaipur

A stupendous chance to explore Jaipur

My story is like “Jeena yaha Marna Yaha”, born in Meerut, brought up in Delhi, professionally a Chartered Accountant. Since I was already living in a metropolitan city so there was no need of going out for higher studies; especially if your parents have too obstinate and shielding nature for their children, that they would never grant permission for even a single trip. We are three siblings an elder sister, a younger brother and me.

The beauty of Rajasthan as read in books and heard from colleagues & friends has always enthralled me and I constantly wished to traverse Ajmer, Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and the whole Rajasthan. Their grace has everlastingly fascinated me and its charm gives an offbeat feel. To my surprise, I got a golden chance to travel to Jaipur (renowned as The Pink City) on occasion of my sister’s wedding falling in December. I was quite excited that I will not get such a prodigious chance until I get married. 😉

Honestly I am not too enamored towards these big fat Indian weddings, for me it’s just wastage of money, food and time followed by a big show off of jewelry and attires. However, this time it was different, I was so happy for this big wedding, after all not everyday you get felicitous chance like this.

Month of December that too in North India in itself is a thrill, the combination of bone chilling cold and fog can give Goosebumps to anyone who has witnessed the cold weather here. I had my count down running on the calendar for the wedding date.

Finally the Wedlock date arrived and we were all set to leave. I had never been there before but had read a lot about it, the only thought in my mind during the journey was what all places I would visit. With the three day function, we had enough time to knock around. I had listed the not to miss places and was firm to visit Jal Mahal, Hawa Mehal, and Jantar Mantar. One of my friend from Jaipur told me to visit The Johri Market of Jaipur at least once

With the adrenaline rush and the curiosity of visiting Jaipur, the 8 hour journey felt like a couple of hours without any exhaustion. During the course of our journey I could frequently see different villages and people in their traditional attires. Some working on their daily routines and children playing around, I was enjoying all this. Our destination was Alsisar Haveli, it was so alluring that I can’t even fantasize about it. One can easily imitate the Royal Rajasthani Moments here. I was staring at it with my eyes wide open and was imagining the lifestyle the kings and the courtiers would have lived.

After the short welcome ceremony, we entered the palace and I could not resist myself from gazing at the walls which were reflecting the traditional Rajput architecture of the palace. The manager took us to our rooms and to my surprise the room was beyond imagination, well-crafted furniture, beautifully carved ceiling and some mesmerizing paintings. Leaving my luggage, I rushed to sightsee the entire area, the hotel has an outdoor pool, a restaurant, a reading hall, and a garden. From the roof terrace you can view Nahargarh Fort. For the snacks hotel’s restaurant served a selection of local and international dishes. Guests can enjoy snacks and beverages by the pool side or in the hotel’s various courtyards.

Soon after the snacks, my brother & I left the palace and took an auto for Hawa Mehal (Place of Winds). It is said that the place named because it was essentially a high screen wall built so the women of the royal household could observe street festivals while unseen from the outside. The Hawa Mahal is a phenomenal, fable, pink sandstone, cautiously honeycombed hive that rises a dizzying five stories, its entrance is from the back of the complex and its opening hours are from 9AM to 5PM.

After spending some time there we left for Johri market situated nearby. As we entered the one of the huge markets of Jaipur, what we saw was a bountiful display of exquisite cloths, sarees and lehangas draped over the counters of Johri shops. Many were inlaid with sparkles or gemstones, ready for admirers of the intricately ornate. The market also had shops selling handmade cushion covers, bed sheets, Jaipuri quilts. In the deepest corner of the market, one can also find tailors for just about everything else with stalls setup nearby to sell their work. The market also hosts jewelry inlaid with sapphire, emerald and semi-precious stones. Several shops also sell cheaper goods, like bangles or intriguing wood-carved souvenirs.

As with any Indian market, be sure to keep an eye on belongings and don’t be shy about haggling. Best way to bargain is know the prices at different shops and then quote the lowest price. That was our way of fruitful bargaining and we bought many handmade articles from the market at very reasonable prices.

By this time we were so rapacious that we decided to go to a nearby food stall, we had Dahi bade and Avadhi Jalebi, one of the famous treats of North India, the two were just fantabulous, one must give a well treat to himself. After having fun at Hawa mehal and Johri bazar we left for Alsisar Haveli and kept The Jal Mahal and Jantar Mantar on board for the next day.

The night went amazing in a royal palace, and the dayspring was beautiful as well, I got ready with an excuse for going to a salon, I pulled up my brother with me and we took an auto rickshaw for Jal Mahal (The Water Palace). It is a palace located in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake. The Jal Mahal palace is considered an architectural beauty built in the Rajput and Mughal styles of architecture. A rickshaw from Jaipur to Jal Mahal will cost between Rs. 50-100 depending on the market rates. A one day rickshaw tour that includes the Amer fort, the Jal Mahal and the Monkey Temple will cost around 500Rs (approx.). As planned earlier, to visit Jal Mahal and Jantar Mantar, we had to drop the plan for visiting Jantar Mantar due to shortage of time (an engagement ceremony was scheduled in the evening), and we went to Amer fort and Monkey Temple, we thought to visit the Jal Mahal in the night if we had some spare time.

After hunting such a beautiful place, we proceeded towards Amer fort. Amer Fort is the best tourist captivation of Jaipur and the sprawling complex combines both immense fortifications with unexpected beauty and charm. Elephants slowly transport the tourists up to the ridge in the main entrance courtyard and this makes a wonderful entrance to the Amer Fort. Inside the palace are beautiful styled state rooms with semi-precious jewel inlaid decoration. Amer Fort is open every day from 8:00 until 05:30 and there is an entrance fee. The grandest way to reach the gates of Amer from the main car park is by elephant and is chargeable. There are a couple of expensive shops to purchase water and drinks. Every tourist visiting Jaipur, must make a call to Amer Fort.

Despite the time running out and calls from family and relatives we rushed to the next stoppage Galta ji Temple, had heard a lot about this and wasn’t possible for me to go back without going there, we went there in haste.

Galta Ji is a large Hindu temple complex. This temple is a popular tourist attraction as it is a home to a large figure of monkeys and this has given rise to the common name of the complex, the monkey temple. Galta Ji, Jaipur is a unique Hindu temple as it is centered on a natural spring that has been channeled to fill seven large pools. In these pools pilgrims come to bath away their sins, at quiet moments, the playful monkeys can be found swimming in the holy waters. There is no entrance fee to visit the temple. Bags of nuts or bananas can be purchased but expect to be mobbed by the monkeys who will happily charge at you for the food. The seven tanks of water are called kunds and the largest, the Galta Kund, according to legend has never ran dry. The Galta Kund is the deepest pool and during important festivals pilgrims jump from the surrounding cliffs into the tank. There are over 200 monkeys living within the temple complex and the macaque monkeys live in groups of four females to every male. Even though the temple is home to hundreds of monkeys the Galta Ji Jaipur temple is dedicated to Ganesha, the elephant god.

Now it was the time to return to Alsisar Haveli for the engagement ceremony. Undoubtedly I was criticized by my parents for reaching late, but my exhilaration was so much that I just gave them a hug leaving them puzzledJ, and I walked away thinking, who says destiny never give you an opportunity, it does but all depends on one's own desire, want to grab it and use it perfectly or just take it for granted. In my case I got an amazing unintentional chance and I made the best of it.

I enjoyed the best moments of my life in Jaipur, the Jaipur darshan (sightseeing) and concluded my lovely sister's wedding celebration over the next few days.

In case if you are literature lover, you have more reasons to visit this beautiful place. Jaipur is going to host literature festival during January 24-29, 2018 so plan your tickets accordingly.
