Travelling Spiritually: A Trip with a Purpose

Travelling Spiritually: A Trip with a Purpose

When it comes to travelling, there is no end to the choices you have for destinations. Yet 55% of travellers take just 1 or 2 trips per year, so that choice is especially important to get the most out of your time and money. So why consider spiritual travel? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I experiencing an upheaval in my life?
  • Am I in the midst of discovering who I am?
  • Do I want to connect to other cultures?
  • Am I hurting but conventional healing isn’t working?

If you answered yes to any of them, spiritual travel might be just what you need. Read on to learn more.

What Exactly Is Spiritual Travel?

Spiritual travel involves trips to deeply meaningful holy and cultural sites. In doing so, you will learn more about them and connect spiritually with yourself and others. You might visit a Buddhist monastery in Asia, make a pilgrimage to Lourdes in France, or visit the Western Wall in Israel. All of these have deep spiritual meaning. There are also some religious festivals you can attend. If these sound expensive, you’d be surprised to learn they really aren’t. Granted, you won’t be staying in a plush hotel, but most religious community’s welcome visitors and only ask for a small donation or for a little work. To make it even more inexpensive, take a look around your local area. Chances are you live within driving distance of a wonderful spiritual retreat area perfect for a weekend getaway.

Another reason to choose a spiritual destination is that more often or not they are absolutely beautiful. Some are surrounded by the best mother nature has to offer, while others include gorgeous architecture and design. Such places are perfect if you are stressed, burned out and really want to get away from everything. At a spiritual destination, you’ll find peace, quiet and solitude, all of which are tremendously rejuvenating and healing.

Spiritual Sites

Spiritual sites are everywhere. While well-known ones like the holy cities in Israel, Mecca, and the Sistine Chapel will always be popular, new ones are always being created, such as the chapel across the street from the 9/11 Memorial in NYC to the new Martin Luther King memorial in Washington DC. A spiritual site needn’t have a particular religious significance either. It can be the town your great grandparents came from or a favorite nature area. It’s all about what makes you feel connected and empowered.

To get started, visit a travel agent or site that specializes in spiritual travel or simply sit down, meditate and see what destination or site is calling to you, then answer the call. All you need is some comfortable shoes and clothes, a journal and a camera. Leave your phone and electronics behind or at least turn them off and forget about them once you arrive. Unplugging is crucial to really get the full spiritual connection going with your chosen site. Instead, absorb everything going on around you and enjoy the energy and joy of being fully connected with the world.
